Bulawayo is Zimbabwe’s principal industrial centre and the chief city of Matabeleland, a Ndebele-dominated province of the country. As the headquarters of Zimbabwe railways, the city is also the country’s main transshipment point for goods to and from South Africa. The site’s historical importance lies mainly in its early days.Bulawayo means “place of slaughter” because it was founded in 1870 by King Lobengula, king of the Ndebele, after a major tribal war. Nearly half a century later it was invaded by the British South Africa Company during the Matabele War and later declared a town. In 1897 it already had electric lighting, even before London. Close to the city also reside the Kame Ruins, one of southern Africa’s Late Iron Age ruins which are now an UNESCO World heritage Site.
