Capital of the Fes-Meknes administrative region, Fes is a city in the northern inland part of Morocco, listed as a World Heritage Site. As the second-largest city after Casablanca, Fes is situated where all regions’ most important cities’ roads meet.
The city was founded in the 9th century by the Idrisid, who was the first powerful Muslim dynasty to rule Morocco.
A big part of the city’s layout, made of madrasas, mosques, zawiyas, and city gates, survived until today, and the city mainly consists of two old medina quarters – Fes el Bali and Fes Jdid -, together with the modern area of Ville Nouvelle, which was developed during the French colonial era.
