Located on the northeastern coast of Lake Tanganyika, Bujumbura is the only actual city in the country, located near the equator. Developed around a German military outpost founded at the end of the XIX century, the city reveals in its urban layout the great influence of the Belgian colonization, which lasted from 1919 to 1962, the year in which it ceased to be the capital of Rwanda-Urundi with the name of Usumbura. After the proclamation of the independence of Burundi, it experienced a notable economic and demographic development: originally, in fact, Bujumbura appeared as a discontinuous aggregation of heterogeneous-looking neighborhoods and, at the time of independence, in 1962, it was only established from a few houses.
