Bobo Dioulasso was the economic and business capital of the country when it formed the terminus of the railroad running to Abidjan, in Côte d’Ivoire. Despite the city has lost some of its former importance when the railroad was extended, Bobo-Dioulasso is still significant both economically and culturally, as a major center of culture and music.
The name means “home of the Bobo-Dioula” and it was likely coined by French colonists and related to the languages of the two major groups in the population. Bobo Dioulasso is also an Islamic center with a large clay mosque.
